Klamath County Fire District No. 1 (KCFD1) is seeking to fill up to three (3) Student Firefighter/Intern positions. The position of Student Firefighter is a non-paid internship position under Oregon Revised Statue 659A.350 in cooperation with Klamath Community College's Emergency Response and Operations program.


This position is responsible for intensive training while carrying out the duties assigned by the Student Supervisor/Mentor. Student Firefighter/Interns are required to work in strict compliance with all rules and regulations that govern Klamath County Fire District No. 1 (KCFD1). For the purposes of training this position responds to a variety of emergent and non-emergent incidents including calls for structural and wildland fire suppression, rescue, BLS and ALS emergency medical services, inter facility transports, mass casualty incidents and man-made and natural disasters; Operates and assists in routine maintenance, cleaning and inspection of KCFD1 vehicles, specialized equipment, facilities and tools.


Tuition Reimbursement � Shall provide up to $1750.00 per college term tuition and uniform/equipment reimbursement for any out of pocket expense related to attendance of a Fire and EMS program leading to successful completion of an A.A.S.


KCFD1 is a Special District governed by an elected, five-member Board of Directors. The District provides fire protection to 192 square miles in and around the City of Klamath Falls serving 52,000 patrons. The District also provides ALS Transport services and is assigned Klamath County Ambulance Service Area #5 that covers a total of 490 square miles. The diverse area covered includes urban/suburban areas and rural/frontier as well. In 2019, KCFD1 personnel responded to mitigate 7,795 calls for service. Additionally, through a contract with the Oregon State Fire Marshal, the District provides a Hazardous Materials Team (HM-4) with primary response to Klamath and Lake Counties.

  • Klamath County Fire District No. 1 Student Firefighters/Interns must maintain full-time college level enrollment in a Fire and EMS program. Student Firefighters must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 cumulative/term AND a minimum of "C" in each course.
  • NFPA 1582 Compliance - Student Firefighters must demonstrate and maintain the physical abilities to perform all essential functions of a firefighter as outlined in NFPA 1582.

Schedule and Assignment

  • Schedule - For the purposes of training Student Firefighter/Interns will be assigned a 56hr/week (48/96) schedule.
  • Assignment - Student Firefighter/Interns will be assigned duty at one of the District's four operational fire stations.
  • Student Firefighter/Interns will be released for training and/or college requirements.
  • Student Firefighter/Interns will not be scheduled shift during normally scheduled school breaks.



All Student Firefighter candidates must complete a Klamath County Fire District No. 1 employment application. The selection process will include (2) two phases. Phases will include application evaluation and competitive interview.

Eligibility Pool

Candidates must pass all phases of the selection process. Candidates will be placed on the eligibility pool based upon final overall score. Klamath County Fire District No.1 reserves the right to make final decisions on all offers and will select the candidate (s) best fitting the needs of the organization. All offers are contingent upon successful completion of a fit-for-duty medical evaluation, drug screen and full background investigation.
